Kwankwaso: An Emerging Pillar in Nigeria Political Space

With the present happenings in the country and the countdown to 2023 general elections in the country, especially the northern part, the political scene seems riddled with so much uncertainty regarding who would be thrown up to fly the flag if eventually the main opposition people's democratic party PDP agree to zone the presidency to the North.

It is no gain saying that the region owing to several factors is well primed to outwit other areas for the plum job for now. This advantage pales into insignificance due to the lackluster performance of the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari whom much was expected from but reverse is the case.

Buhari has shown clear terms that he has performed quite below expectations when the situation the country is faced with now compared to the country he inherited in 2015. The All Progressives Congress (APC) led government has failed in itself imposed three critical areas, Security, Economy and Anti-corruption.

With the current spate of insecurity in the Northern region and in the country, the inability of the present administration to find a lasting solution to the situation, the majority of the populace in the country have lost confidence in the ability of current leadership in the country especially All Progressives Congress, APC.

When appraised critically, there seems not to be others who have performed creditably well in the country aside few like Gov. Babagana Zullum, Gov Nyessom Wike, Gov Nasir Elrufai, Gov Seyi Makinde, Gov Emmanuel. This governors can perform if given the mantle of leadership to rule this country.

However, when one is looking outside the current government,  names such as Engr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Dr Peter Obi, Senator Abubakar Saraki,  Senator Ahmed Markarfi, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, amongst others come to mind when the search is narrowed down. As the search for a competent leadership or at best a presidential material continues across the country, many see Kwankwaso, a two term governor of Kano State and former minister and immediate past member representing Kano central in the senate as the best option to lead the country.

Engr. Sen Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is a man who is averse to so much talk and noise but quick in action and result oriented.

Those who hold this view premise their assessment on his track record of achievement and  conduct in public offices where he has had opportunity of holding in the past, saying if and when given the chance the nation would benefit tremendously from his leadership quality.

Political pundits argue that when he held sway as governor of Kano State he transformed the state to the admiration of all including his political opponents. There was no sector he left untouched, ranging from the education sector where the state became a reference point to others till date in the country.

Education is so dear to him that even after leaving public office, he is still committed to it, reaching out to the indigent students by offering scholarship and sponsorship. Another angle was added to this last month when he organised an entrepreneur event for the graduates where jobs were offered to many of them by big organisation like Dangote, Bua, Tiamin and some foreign organisations. This is first of its kind in the country.

And in physical infrastructure like  road construction and other basic, Kwankwaso’s achievements stand tall, especially in terms of opening up Kano city via several overhead and underground bridges including first class network of roads adjoining and adoring within and outside the city.

He also performed creditably well in other critical sectors such as health care delivery, citizens’ empowerment, security, sports, agriculture etc. These feats he accomplished via financial prudence, which has come to be seen as remarkable in the country.

It is to Kwankwaso’s credit that he has never been associated with any form of financial impropriety throughout his political journey as governor, minister and parliamentarian. Kwankwaso would perform and deliver in terms of leadership. People believe in his leadership style and trust across party lines in the region.

One great factor that may also help and work for him, is age, he is still in the middle of 60 and still agile, strong compared to some who many believe are too old to aspire. Kwankwaso who recently celebrated his 64 birthday.

If the quest by People's Democratic Party PDP to return to power by 2023, can only be achieved by the party if a candidate like Kwankwaso is pick to fly the party's flag. But Kwankwaso himself recently declared  that his major preoccupation for now is how to help strengthen the party PDP through Kwankwassiya movement across the country.
