Believe it or not, flyovers such as being constructed in Kano are textbook examples of misplaced priority.

Sen. Kwankwaso's criticism was correct. However, we have more pressing issues that need the Kano State government's urgent attention than even education, and that is health.

According to a reliable source, the whole of Murtala Specialist Hospital has only eight incubators for neonates (newborn babies). Needless to say, that number is too short for the hospital that receives patients in hundreds daily. The doctors have to triage patients, which leads to the death of many of them. Most of their parents cannot go to other hospitals for obvious reasons.

Despite the above, which is only the tip of the iceberg at the hospital and the health ministry, the government spends billions building those bridges. Going by Governor Ganduje's BBC Hausa interview, he cares to leave visible marks so as to be remembered in the next 100 years! Fixing hospitals attended by the masses is not one of such projects, of course.

I like physical infrastructures. They are – or can be – beautiful scenes and indicators of 'development'. However, we are not there yet. Lack of education, employment and rise of puberty are triggers of insecurity, depression and virtually everything negative in our communities. The government ought to learn to prioritise; else, weu will reap (more of) what we sow.

I only demand better governance. No more, no less.
